I'm from South Africa. Our university distributed an email inviting us to a conference in London. I got accepted for an all expenses paid trip as I'm from a third world country, I just have to pay the hotel fees upfront. I went to the hotel's website and found some bad photoshop jobs, the address belongs to the Scherlock Holmes museum in London and can't find any other info on the hotel or conference besides their own websites.
Here is the email that made me suspicious:

Send in the full paper for review and inclusion in our final program of event which will enable your presentation at the Global Conference on Sustainable Environment, Energy and Agriculture (GCSEEA 2017) slated for 23rd-27th January, 2017 at the Baker Paradise Hotel. Log on http://www.gcseea.org.uk to complete the registration and access grant application forms respectively to enable the GCSEEA Grant Committee fund your Air Ticket, Visa Fee, Travel Insurance and Per Diem.

We also wish to inform you that due to our past experiences with delegates that absconded after their grants were disbursed, the Committee have decided to advise all the delegates to book their hotel reservations at the conference venue, and send in the paid hotel reservation receipt which will be forwarded to our bankers for the disbursement of their grants.

Upon the confirmation of your paid hotel reservation receipt, the Grant Committee will forward it to the bankers for the disbursement of your grant at the earliest. Please do not hesitate to include the cost of your paid hotel reservation in Per Diem for reimbursement during the disbursement of your grant. Note that hotel reservation receipts are added to the confirmed list on a 'first come, first served' basis by our Grant Committee and the bankers.

Thanks for posting. It's a definite scam and there is no conference. It would be a good idea to alert your university to this so that none of your colleagues are caught out by it.
