This is an increasingly common scam that targets just about anyone (including Scamwarners!) who owns an Internet domain, whether .com, .net, .biz or any other. Here are some sample emails:

Dear CEO,

We are the domain name registration organization in Asia, which mainly deal with international company's in Asia. We have something important need to confirm with your company.

On the March 21, 2010 we received a formal application from a company called "Yu-Xin International Holdings Ltd" who are applying to register "[real name deleted]" as domain name and internet keyword, they wanted to apply for other domain names and internet keyword you have not registered yet.

through our body.

After our initial examination, we found that the keywords and domain names applied for registration are as same as your company's name and trademark. These days we are dealing with it. If you do not know this company, we doubt that they have other aims to buy these domain names. Now we have not finished the registration of "Yu-Xin International Holdings Ltd" yet, in order to deal with this issue better, Please contact us by telephone or email as soon as possible.

Best Regards,

THIS IS A SCAM. Obviously it is predicated on the assumption that a business owner will be frightened of having someone infringe upon his good name, and will therefore pay to register .cn. .hk and other Asian extensions. In most cases the scammers are not even in a position to register a domain and will simply steal the "registration" fees.

Some, however, are more sophisticated, and once they are sure they have a victim in their clutches they will proceed to register all the possible variant domains available and essentially blackmail the business into buying them at inflated prices.
