Hi,

I had an item up for sale on a website and got a message on my phone to email this guy that was interested.
I did and he asked about the item.
I told him price etc. and he said he was interested and asked for my paypal details so he could send payment.

I game him the payment address which is my email address.

Then got a message from him saying he had payed and to check my mail. Also to send it as a gift to his son in Nigeria.
Alarm bells went off!!!!

In my junk folder I found 2 suspicious fake paypal requests.
I emailed him back and said I won't ship outside Ireland and to cancel his payment, not wanting to accuse him outright as being a scammer.
He wrote back saying to please send it, I replied saying no.

I put his email address into google and it was mentioned on a twitter post as being a scam address.

I then got another junk mail saying payment issue has to be resolved so I blocked this fake paypal company and blocked him and reported both as a phishing scam.

I then changed my email password and paypal password.

So what I am wondering is if I did the right thing here? Can any information be stolen or any further hassle be caused by him having my email address, phone number and possibly my name?

Any help would be welcomed?

Hello!

Besides possible getting some more scam mail to the email address you gave him nothing to worry about.He just asked you for your paypal email address so you would believe the fake paypal emails. Did he send you any emails besides the fake PayPal emails? If so please post those removing your information.

Also posting the email address again to make searchable typo in the post above [email protected]

Stories about sending items to a relative living in Nigeria are common, and a telltale indicator that indeed it is a scam. You'd send the item, never receive payment, and that'd be the last you'd hear of it. You did completely the right thing.

If you flat-out tell him that you are no longer interested in the transaction - no need to accuse him of being a scammer - he'll simply move on to someone who will send the item to Nigeria - likely where he himself is.

Scammers are only interested in money, so the only thing that he might use your personal information for is to target you for another scam, under a different name and a different scenario. If you were concerned from a security point of view, you need not be as it's extremely unlikely that the scammer would use your information for anything other than another scam, using the details to make it seem more genuine and lend it credibility.

The best thing to do is cease all contact, and ignore any further suspicious messages. He'll go away as soon as you realises he won't be getting anything out of you.

Just remover your information from the header before posting.

Scammers will sometimes recycle victims information like thier name, address and if you send any documents but there is not much he could do with a phone number. Worst case other scammers could call or text you.

Looks like you posted the header of the message you sent the lad; there are no Received headers, and the originating IP is in Vodafone, Ireland. Could you post the headers of the fake PayPal messages? PayPal does not hold payment waiting for a tracking number, so that message had to come from a scammer.

Neither message's headers tell us where the scammer is, though obviously from the body of the message he is in Nigeria. The spoofed Paypal one was sent from a Gmail account, with a return address at secureroot (a real Paypal message would come from Paypal's server); the other one was sent from a BlackBerry, which hides its location. Of course Paypal would never ask anyone to send money by Western Union.

It should be. Your best course of action is simply not to worry, and instead of sending e-mails rejecting the "transaction", simply ignore him. He will go away; they all do once they can no longer smell money. If you are unfortunate enough to have future dealings with scammers in this way, once you're sure they're not legitimate buyers, simply stop communicating with them. It's not as if they could get you penalised by PayPal or eBay or anyone; they are after all criminals operating under false pretenses and most likely false details.
